Cargo moves in standardized containers (20ft, 40ft, 40HQ) on weekly vessel sailings between major ports. What is the difference between FCL and LCL?
FCL (Full Container Load): dedicated container for one shipper (20ft, 40ft, 40HQ). Pros: maximum cost savings on low-value cost-sensitive commodities, faster transit (no consolidation handling), better cargo security (container sealed origin to destination), can be floor-loaded without palletization. Cons: trucking to limited-access locations is harder, container/vessel space sometimes hard to secure for smaller shippers during market fluctuations, delivery to Amazon FBA facilities is difficult.
LCL (Less-than-Container Load): shared container for shipments 1-15 cbm. Pros: pay only for cbm used, weekly consolidation schedules give multiple vessel options, easier delivery to Amazon FBA facilities, costs for customs inspections shared across all shippers, more flexible delivery options (liftgate, residential). Cons: cargo release takes additional days for warehouse separation, higher chance of cargo loss/damage from multiple handling stages, priced per cbm with weight surcharges on heavy goods.

FCL rates run roughly $2,000-$6,000 per 40ft container on major lanes, with peak-season surcharges adding 20-50%. LCL is priced per cbm + per kg (typically $40-$150/cbm). Add THC (terminal handling), documentation, customs, and destination fees. Fuel surcharges (BAF) and security (ISPS) apply.
